In an effort to provide practical training, the school requires students to work
at least one paid internship for 10 weeks during their college career. Student may compete for any internship, but seeking the advise of your advisor is recommended. Many students have
several internships before graduation.
In recent years, VisCom students have
worked on paid internships at newspapers and magazines and in
advertising, photo illustration, and audio-visual production.
Internships have been available in almost all states and several
international locations, including Brazil, France, Japan, and Norway.
The school and the college provides assistance for students in pursuit of
intership possiblities. All visual communication students have access
to a searchable database located in the Visual Communication office.
Faculty also provides students with email distribution of current
available internships and of upcoming on-campus interviews.
Many VisCom students are active members
of the Ohio News Photographers Association, Society of News Design and other professional groups including the National Press
Photographers Association and the
American Society of Magazine Photographers. Ohio University students
have been successful in state and national photography competitions,
and have done particularly well in the annual William Randolph Hearst
foundation photojournalism competition, which is open to any student
taking photojournalism courses in any of the more than 90 participating
colleges and universities.
