complete Ohio University's online application and turn in the PDF of
the School of Visual Communication's application to be eligible for
VisCom's Scholarships.
VisCom Scholarships
The School of Visual Communication also offers a variety of graduate scholarships. These
scholarships are awarded during the spring VisCom celebration.
Scholarship applications are available in the office of
Visual Communication, 301 Seigfred Hall. Application for these

Scripps College of Communication and VisCom Scholarship
(all VisCom majors)
The scholarship is to be awarded to students who are enrolled in the
School of Visual Communication at Ohio University. Students selected to
receive this scholarship should have demonstrated excellence within the
field of visual communication, as well as within the school and
university.
The number of annual awards and the amount of each shall be determined by the amount available for expenditure.
Scholarship Descriptions/Guidelines
The Paul Schutzer Memorial Award
Paul
Schutzer is a former LIFE magazine photographer who was killed while on
assignment while covering the Israeli-Arab warfare in the Sinai Desert.
This
award was established in his name, to provide an annual grant that
would help fund an outstanding student of photojournalism to cover a
story or project in depth and produce a photo essay. The applicant must
be a full-time advanced level photojournalism student majoring in the
School of Visual Communication at Ohio University. Charles L. Scott Scholarship
This
scholarship is to be awarded to students who are enrolled in the School
of Visual Communication at Ohio University. Students selected to
receive this scholarship should have demonstrated excellence within the
field of Visual Communication, as well as within the school and
university.
The number of annual awards and the amount of each shall be determined by the amount available for expenditure.
Payment
of this award to the recipient will be made in three installments to
cover the academic year. The scholarship shall be used toward tuition,
room and board, textbooks and other educationally-related expenses
Vern N. Utley Scholarship
This scholarship is to be awarded to a multicultural student who is enrolled in the School of Visual Communication.
Payment
of this award to the recipient will be made in three installments to
cover the academic year. The scholarship shall be used toward tuition,
room and board, textbooks and other educationally-related expenses.
Madeline L. Utley Scholarship
The
scholarship is to be awarded to a student from Fairfield County, Ohio
who is enrolled in either the School of Visual Communication or the
E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. The scholarship committee of the
College of Communication will work with the scholarship committees of
the schools to determine who has financial need.
Payment
of this award to the recipient will be made in three installments to
cover the academic year. The scholarship shall be used toward tuition,
room and board, textbooks and other educationally-related expenses.
Founder’s Vision Award
This
fund will be distributed to a student who proposes a project that best
demonstrates the vision of the founders when they created a program to
teach about the importance of communicating with visuals. Funds will be
distributed in the form of an award to support expenses related to
completion of this project.
Applicants
will be required to submit a project proposal, timeline, and budget to
the selection committee. The selected student will complete the project
while enrolled for VICO 491/691 to ensure faculty guidance of the
project. All students in the School of Visual Communication are
eligible.
Richard H. and Diane K. Gentry Journalism-Visual Communication Student Documentary Project Fund
This
fund is to be awarded to students enrolled in the College of
Communication, majoring in Journalism or Visual Communication.
Applicants must apply in writing, detailing a specific documentary
project to be funded, one which will involve both words and photographs
to document person, places, and issues. Money may be used to cover the
cost of travel and/or supplies.
The
Gentrys define documentary work as an honest, in-depth coverage of a
subject–concerned, humanistic, photography combined with investigative
reporting, incisive interviewing, and careful observation. Documentary
work is more than a study of social problems. It can also be a positive
celebration of life. We hope that students and faculty will be
responsive to both of these sides of documentary work, emphasizing the
good as well as the bad within the human condition.
Diane K. Gentry Visual Communications Scholarship
The
scholarship is for juniors, seniors and graduate students based on a
commitment to a career in photography, genuine talent and also
financial need. Must have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.
The
photography student must prefer documentary photography of people and
have good photojournalistic skill. The students chosen must be adept in
photography a range of human emotions, conditions and situations.
Whether the applicant works in print video, film or any other medium,
they should be concerned photographers who will interpret life in the
U.S.A. honestly, sensitively and with heart. The number of annual awards and the amount of each shall be determined by the amount available for expenditure. |
