Experience:
- Over 20 years of experience in the visual communication field with positions in management, as a photo editor, as a photojournalist, and as a designer. His employers include: St. Petersburg Times, Morning Advocate and State-Times, Shreveport Journal, and the Natchitoches Times. He has served as a freelance photojournalist and picture editor for the Associated Press and United Press International. Beyond newspapers, his work has been published in Life, Ohio 24/7, Newsphotographer, as well as on the web. Additionally, he has co-authored papers presented to AEJMC as well as co-designed and conducted experiments in print and web user perception.
- Contest coordinator for the international NPPA Best of Photojournalism Picture Editing Contest.
- He is a volunteer helping to promote the Festival of the Photograph event held in Charlottesville, VA annually.
- He served co-chair of the National Press Photographers Association Flying Short Course for three years, and served on the Visual Edge Workshop staff.
- Alost holds a bachelor of science in Mass Communication degree from Louisiana State University, a masters of science degree from Ohio University where he was a Knight Fellow, and is currently working on a doctoral degree in the Scripps School of Journalism. He is a member of Kappa Tau Alpha and Gama Beta Phi honors societies, and the Associated Press Photo Managers group.
- Within the university, Alost serves on the College of Communication Curriculum Committee and as the school curriculum chair, The Post Publishing Board, The University Academic Advising Council, the University Judiciary Board, the Knight Fellowship committee, Fulbright review committees, as well as numerous graduate project committees.
